All You Need To Know About Twitter Spaces
Move over Clubhouse, there’s a new room to join!
Twitter is one of the most popular social media platforms in the world (take our word for it). The app has always been a place for innovation and information-sharing, and on May 3rd, they combined those two ideas into a new feature for the platform, Spaces. Don’t worry, we’re here to teach you all you need to know about Twitter Spaces
Spaces is a new, live audio-only feature that allows users with over 600 followers the ability to host live chat rooms with their audience. The feature comes in response to other apps like Clubhouse proving the popularity of live, audio-only conversations. Here’s how it works:
When someone you follow either starts or speaks in a Space, a purple bubble will appear at the top of your timeline.
From here, you can join the Space to listen, react, DM the Space, request to speak and more. When you join a Space as a speaker, you can also pin Tweets, turn on captions, and share the Space with your followers, either in a DM or Tweet.
How to use Twitter Spaces:
- To start a Space, long press on the ‘Compose Tweet’ button on your Home timeline, then tap the Spaces icon.
- When creating a Space, you’ll need to give it a name and hit ‘Start!’
- To schedule a Space, tap ‘Schedule for Later’. Then, choose the date and time you’d like to start!
- Once a Space has started, the Host can send requests to Listeners to become Speakers. All you have to do is tap on the profile of the person you want to share with, and add them as a ‘Speaker!’

Tips for facilitating effective Twitter Spaces
- Understand how Twitter Spaces works and get comfortable with all its features
- Foster a healthy and inviting community to join in the conversation
- Set rules of conversation/topic but have fun and don’t be afraid to get off-topic
- Be wary of unwanted comments/voices, and be equipped to mute / remove users if needed
- Keep your audience engaged and talking, nothing is worse than dead air
- Allow others to have the floor and offer their perspective on the topic
Now that you’ve understood the basics of Spaces, the floor is yours to share your ideas, chat with friends, and more! Here are a few ideas for getting started:
Expertise Advice
Twitter Spaces truly give you the opportunity to speak with your audience and reinforce why they followed you, your expertise in your field. Take what you know, and flex your knowledge! You could show off how to create a podcast, or how to design a website. If you know it, you should share it!
Host Open Discussions
At its core, Twitter Spaces allow for live conversations with your audience and the ability to openly communicate with them. You could create an open forum where your audience can all discuss a topic alongside you, like what music they are listening to or their favourite podcast at the moment.
Live Podcasts
Speaking of podcasts, Twitter Spaces is a great way to host a live podcast to your audience. Nothing is better for podcasts than natural conversations, so start a Twitter Space and have those conversations live to your audience. It allows for less platform-jumping for your audience and can be as sporadic as drafting a Tweet may be.
Q&A’s
Twitter Spaces are the perfect places for hosting a Q&A with your audience. Since you have the ability to share the mic with others, you can easily facilitate a digital lineup of speakers with questions. Give your audience all the information they need through Twitter Spaces
Feedback
As an artist or creative, you could create a Twitter Space for live feedback on projects, events, or releases. Many artists rely on project ‘Release Parties ’ or events to promote their newly released projects. Twitter Spaces allows the whole world to come and experience this event with you, right from their smartphone!
